VI

WHEN SCRAPYARDS
BECOME OUR QUARRIES, AND LANDFILLS
OUR FORESTS

No leftovers or trash are conceived in the natural order.

Everything revolves in an almost unalterable cycle.

But we still haven’t been able to fully understand how the wheel spins.

Those things that could roll down and -led by their inertia- return to their natural cycle,

fall on top of us and pile up.

The scrapyards and landfills our society has created embody,

in an outrageous manner, our growing failure.

As we have been exploiting quarries and depleting forests since our early days as a civilisation,

architecture must stop looking for quarries and forests to build spaces.

It should scavenge the huge amount of waste produced by the system,

searching carefully for the incredible artefacts it leaves in its wake.

The critical system leaves behind magnificent, incredible artefacts

ready to host our activities and our lives.
